The Harrisonburg Metropolitan Area is served by the Rockingham County Department of Fire and Rescue, the City of Harrisonburg Fire Department, and the Harrisonburg-Rockingham Emergency Communications Center.
The Rockingham County Department of Fire & Rescue includes the following functional divisions: training, prevention, public education, a regional hazardous materials response team, an emergency dive and recovery team, nine volunteer Fire Companies, six volunteer Rescue Squads and one combination Fire & Rescue Squad station. There are approximately 400 fire and emergency medical service (EMS) volunteers, 59 career staff and 20 part-time staff.
The City of Harrisonburg Fire Department operates four engine companies and one ladder truck out of stations strategically located throughout the City. The stations are staffed by approximately 69 field personnel and 15 administrative staff.
The Harrisonburg-Rockingham Emergency Communications Center is a consolidated, multi-disciplined 9-1-1- Center staffed with 44 employees and provides state of the art emergency and non-emergency communications services to the citizens of the City of Harrisonburg and Rockingham County, the towns within the county, public safety providers, and those passing through. The HRECC receives and dispatches calls for nine law enforcement, 19 fire, and 13 rescue agencies.
