Transportation

The Harrisonburg Metro Area is not only close to the nation’s capital, it offers convenient air travel to major markets, great motor freight and rail shipping, and access to the Virginia Port Authority in Hampton Roads. Two-thirds of the U.S. population is located within a one-day drive of the Metro Area.

Highways and Interstate Access

The Metro Area is conveniently located near three of Virginia’s major Interstate corridors. I-81, the north/south route, offers six interchanges within the City of Harrisonburg and Rockingham County. Travel and transportation east and west are covered by I-64, just 20 miles to the south, and I-66, only 36 miles to the north.

Area highways include: Highway 11; Highway 211; Highway 256; Highway 257; Highway 259; Highway 276; Highway 290; Highway 33; Highway 340; Highway 42; and Highway 48.

Airports

Shenandoah Valley Regional Airport (SHD)

Shenandoah Valley Regional Airport, served by United Express and USAir Express, now serves frequent direct flights to Orlando, Florida and daily flights to Dulles International Airport in Washington, D.C.

Dulles International Airport (IAD)

Just two hours north on I-66, Dulles International Airport supports more than 80 non-stop flights to U.S. destinations and nearly 50 non-stops to international destinations.

Railroads

CSX, Norfolk Southern and the Shenandoah Valley Shortline provide freight rail service.

Ports

Virginia Port Authority

Headquartered in Norfolk, the Virginia Port Authority operates three major port facilities in the Hampton Roads area for break-bulk and container cargo.  The three terminals together handled over 2 million TEUs and 475,000 tons of break bulk cargo in 2006, making it the second busiest port on the East coast.

Virginia Inland Port

The Virginia Inland Port is located just west of Washington, D.C., in Warren County.  Cargo from the other three state-owned terminals travels to VIP five days a week, bringing the Port of Virginia 220 miles closer to the U.S. Market, and 75 international shipping lines. The Port is within one mile from I-66 and within five miles of I-81. The facility also contains 17,820 of on-site rail serviced by Norfolk Southern.
