The Metro Area is served by multiple electricity suppliers, and has a natural gas supply as well. Telecommunications (including fiber optics), water and sewer and solid waste disposal services are also readily available.
County residents and businesses are served by Dominion Power and Shenandoah Valley Electric Cooperative. Dominion Power also offers resources and opportunities for exploring alternative energy sources. SVEC is a member-owner of Old Dominion Electric Cooperative. SVEC purchases a majority of its wholesale electricity from ODEC. The Cooperative also purchases a small portion of its wholesale requirements from the Southeastern Power Administration.
Public water services are provided by the Rockingham County Department of Public Works, which serves urban areas in the County. Sanitary sewer lines are also owned and operated by the Rockingham County Department of Public Works. The Harrisonburg-Rockingham Regional Sewer Authority operates the regional wastewater treatment plant.
Columbia Gas of Virginia delivers reliable natural gas to the Shenandoah Valley, providing a 4-inch medium pressure system with significant excess capacity for the site. Columbia is one of the seven energy distribution companies of NiSource Inc., serving 3.8 million natural gas and electric customers nationwide.
Rockingham County’s Department of Public Works provides the management of solid waste and is one of the most important functions of the Metro Area. Rockingham County is dedicated to providing a clean and safe environment for residents through a system of solid waste collection and recycling centers, a modern sanitary landfill, environmental education and enforcement programs.
