A Bridgewater College building project is the first on campus to receive recognition from the U.S. Green Building Council.
Stone Village, a fivebuilding apartment development, gained certified status as a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design project this month.
The apartments, along with renovations and additions to nearby residence halls, were paid for through a $14 million U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development loan.
The project received the distinction because it was built to environmentally friendly standards specified by the building council.
Construction began on the apartments in summer 2010 and the village was dedicated in August.
The buildings’ landscaping, materials, electrical systems and appliances were built or purchased with sustainability in mind, according to Kenneth Mayer, principal- in- charge of the project’s architectural firm, Moser Mayer Phoenix Associates.
Major green initiatives include the installation of sensor lights and energy-efficient appliances, and a system that will clean storm-water runoff. At least 20 percent of the building supplies were made from recycled materials and 20 percent of the materials were manufactured or obtained within 500 miles of Bridgewater College, cutting down on fuel use.
“Perhaps the most valuable part of the process has been what we learned about sustainable building materials and methods, which is information we can use to inform future projects,” Anne Keeler, vice president for finance and treasurer at Bridgewater, said in a press release.
