Southeast Connector Project Closing Road For 11 Days

HARRISONBURG — The next portion of the Southeast Connector project will have some drivers taking a different route to their final destinations.
According to signs posted near the site, the section of Stone Spring Road between Peach Grove Avenue and Port Republic Road just south of the Harrisonburg city limits will be closed to through-traffic for intersection improvements starting Friday.
The road will remain closed while construction on the roughly mile-long segment of road continues until the scheduled completion date of Aug. 18.
During the closure, eastbound traffic on Stone Spring Road will be detoured onto Peach Grove Avenue and then east onto Port Republic Road. Those needing to travel west on Stone Spring Road will detour west along Port Republic Road and then south on Peach Grove Avenue before reconnecting with Stone Spring.
On Friday, the Virginia Department of Transportation released notice that the closure of the road would begin Tuesday. On Sunday, VDOT Staunton District spokeswoman Sandy Myers said the reason for differing starting dates was due to an estimated amount of time the state had given for completion of the project.
Myers, however, said the department itself would not be handling the project, but rather it would be taken care of by developers of the property at that location. That accounted for the discrepancy between the VDOT announcement and the signs posted at the site, she said.
Myers could not confirm the name of the developer who would be handling the road project.
Stone Port, a 105-acre mixed-use development complex that will include apartments, office space and retail stores, is at the intersection of Stone Spring and Port Republic roads.
The county and VDOT are working to finish the eastern portion of the Southeast Connector, which will extend Stone Spring Road east to U.S. 33 near Boyers Road. The entire project eventually ties U.S. 33 from Erickson Avenue on Harrisonburg’s west side to U.S. 33 just east of the city.
The city’s last piece of the project will go from about the entrance to Walmart on Erickson Avenue to the western city limits, widening Erickson to a five-lane roadway with a center turn lane, bicycle lanes and sidewalks.
