Virginia Sesquicentennial Commemoration of the American Civil WarThe Civil War Sesquicentennial begins in 2011 and continues through 2015. This time frame will mark the 150th anniversary of the battles of the Civil War. Rockingham County experienced the Civil War in all of its phases given its proximity to two major highways: the Rockingham Turnpike (modern-day U.S. 33) and the Valley Turnpike (U.S. 11). Rockingham County was also the location of the last two battles of Confederate General Thomas J. “Stonewall” Jackson’s 1862 Valley Campaign.
